Infantry Online was originally launched all the way back in 1999 by Sony Online Entertainment. Now the shooter is back in 2024 with a relaunch and remaster, bringing the 2D isometric gameplay fans of the game remember. The game is now known as FreeInfantry, and is available to play, you guessed it, for free on Steam. The online multiplayer shooter will have no microtransactions.
FreeInfantry offers a variety of gameplay modes including standard skirmish, capture-the-flag, and cooperative modes against CPU-controlled enemies. Player-based modes allow for class customization, weapon upgrades, and base-building. FreeInfantry operates under a license agreement similar to that of "Project 1999", a fan-led legacy server for EverQuest.
If you're looking for a little nostalgia FreeInfantry looks to deliver that in spades. The Steam reviews are currently "Very Positive", with many talking about reliving their childhoods and getting back into a game they loved.
