It's time to take a look at the top MMORPGs with the best pets and/or companions. A good companion can be a real boon to your play experience. Summoner classes are always popular in MMOs, and other games provide all players with a constant companion. So let's take a look at the best pet/companion systems out there.
For me Star Wars: The Old Republic has the best companion system in the MMO genre. Not only do they accompany you during your quests, but they also have story implications in which they take part, leave you, return later, and even die. No other MMORPG incorporates companions into the story the way SWTOR does. Romance and even Date Nights are always a possibility, too.
Sure, World of Warcraft Hunters can tame all sorts of different pets, but even the typical cosmetic pets can be sent into action with the pet battle system. There are a ton of pets you can collect and many players enjoy battling their little friends to see who comes out on top.
Guild Wars 2 features a metric ton of pets that Rangers can tame, as well as other companions that can be summoned by Necromancers and Mesmers. All pets in GW2 have abilities you need to actively use in order to get the most out of them. Rangers can swap pets and use their abilities in combat, and Mesmers can explode their magical clones for a damage boost.
Neverwinter's companion system is robust, with lots of different companions, both human and animal, to choose from. The companions have their own stats and can be equipped with companion gear to boost those stats. Neverwinter is another one of those game where your companion is always with you in solo content. As such, they make the list for being an integral part of the gameplay experience, seriously, they are absolutely required and you must pay attention to them and their gear.
Rappelz is a game I hadn't heard of before researching this list, but seems to have one of the most in-depth pet systems in the genre. Pretty much every creature you see can be tamed, including bosses. Your pets can then evolve and have their own passive and active abilities.
We have to lead off any Final Fantasy XIV companion talk with Chocobos, because why wouldn't we? But the main reason XIV makes this list is due to the duty support system that allows you to bring NPC companions into group content instead of searching out other players. It's something World of Warcraft is copying, and has proven immensely popular with the player base.
