Two and a half years after purchasing Gearbox Software, it is rumored that Embracer is considering selling the Borderlands developer. According to a report on Reuters, (and later picked up by MarketScreener) “three people familiar with the matter” have stated that Embracer is considering selling the studio. The sources told Reuters that Embracer has received offers from parties, mostly “international gaming groups”, interested in the studio, and they’re considering it.
While these sources state that deals are being considered, they also warn that one may not actually happen. Of course, Embracer, along with Goldman Sachs and Aream & Co., who the sources say the company is working with to explore the sale, refused to comment on the claims.
Considering the fact that Embracer announced plans to restructure in June, it’s not an unlikely claim. It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens since Gearbox also oversees the old Perfect World library including Star Trek Online and Neverwinter.
