Robocraft 2, the sequel to Freejam’s popular robot-building battle vehicle game, isn’t faring nearly as well as its predecessor. The game, which was released into early access on Steam in November, currently has 1,500 reviews, most of which are negative. Complaints range from there already being microtransactions in game, to the game’s general performance, and to the toxic (yet small) community.
This very likely explains why the developer announced plans to rebuild the game “from the ground up”. The goal is to make it closer to what players loved about the original game, with better graphics and technology.
The announcement lists things players can expect when the rebuild is finished. Among these are a block-by-block building system closer to the original game, cube health, and damage systems that match the original, and several long-term progression features. Other planned features include low latency control and optimized systems that will support more players and PVE units.
We’re sure there’s a lesson to be learned here. Probably that while it’s great to innovate and add new things to a game, it’s not such a good idea to make drastic changes to something that obviously works.
