Look, I'm not a fan of those "X game lost Y% of its player base" articles. That's mainly because they're clickbait at best, or they lack any real insight beyond "players checked out a new game and many didn't stick around" at worst. They aren't ALL garbage, of course. Some do provide insight into certain actions taken by developers or publishers that resulted in pushing large groups of players out of the game. In fact, this recent PCGamesN article on The First Descendant is pretty good because it reviews literal changes that led to the downswing.
What I do enjoy from time to time, is looking at games that used to send us press materials almost daily and then all of a sudden go dark. We no longer receive press releases, the game's social accounts are basically dark, and in some cases, even the official site lacks any real updates. We did this for games like Redfall only to find out shortly after that the game was officially done for soon.
Now, I don't know why, but today Tarisland came to my mind. I think I just happened to be on the prowl for F2P MMORPG news and it dawned on me that I haven't heard from the team in months. The F2P MMO was released on PC and Android in June of 2024 and, right out of the gate, was viewed as a massive World of Warcraft clone. While the team at Level Infinite hated being called that, the comparisons were totally apt. In fact, that didn't originally seem like such a bad idea given that, at the time, the relationship between Activision Blizzard and NetEase collapsed and the company's games weren't available in China anymore. That situation was resolved, though, so where did that leave Tarisland?
After receiving multiple press releases, almost weekly, as the MMO headed into Season 1 with their Blight Dragon Elegy update, things seemed to be moving right along. That season launched in October 2024. The next stage of that update came in February 2025 and added content and a level cap increase. This was all happening around additional development the devs had planned to remove gender locks on classes.
In between those two patches, the official site continued to see updates on events, community updates via FAQs, and more. Since February 17th...things have been dark on the site. While Steam wasn't the initial distribution platform for Tarisland, it did make it to the platform in October of 2024 and landed there with a massive "thud." Their current Steam Charts results are abysmal, but it was never good to begin with. Most players were probably on the game's own launcher or on Android anyway.
However, looking around the internet, I think the game may be "unofficialy" dead at this point. The site hasn't posted anything since mid-February and while they are reasonably active on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, those posts are more about announcing new appearances, general maintenance windows, or shout outs to guilds. There hasn't been a dev update in a long time now.
Level Infinite hasn't mentioned the game, as best as I can tell, on their X account since August of 2024. They've moved on to talking about other games. Ironically, the most recent "responses" from Level Infinite are actually on Tarisland's Google Play page where they're resonding to negative reviews left in the last month.
It seems like the game has literally gone dark and no one told the people running the servers. I can't say they're closing up shop, but I can say that if 24 hours after posting this we received news that the game was announcing a shutdown, I wouldn't be at all surprised.
Did you play Tarisland? What were your thoughts? Do you think it's on its way out soon?
