MMOBOMB
May 10, 2024
Twin Drums’ afrofantasy MMORPG The Wagadu Chronicles began as an interesting project with a successful Kickstarter and backing from Riot Games back in 2020. Unfortunately, things don’t always go as well as you’d hope. Today, the developer announced (via MassivelyOP) that it would be ending the project, stating that the company doesn’t have the resources to keep at it. Reasons noted include COVID-19, inflation, and a loss of funding. It’s true that Riot shuttered the program that was backing not just The Wagadu Chronicles, but other games like it.
It’s a sad thing to hear as it would have made for a unique entry into the MMORPG space. Unfortunately, even with that being the case, it’s not hard to admit that it’s difficult to make your mark in that space.
The good news is that backers didn’t walk away with nothing. According to the announcement the “final deliverables” included a 7 th Era D&D compatible setting book PDF, a PDF of The Guide for Afrofantasy, and a PDF artbook. Backers should already have those items in their email, even though the physical versions of these books that were promised won't happen either.
Early access ends on May 18th.
