Earlier today, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced 650 Microsoft Gaming layoffs via an internal memo. The email, obtained by The Verge, states that the latest round of job eliminations is “part of aligning [the company’s] post-acquisition team structure and managing [its] business”. It also states that the jobs being culled are “mostly corporate and supporting functions”. This sounds a bit like there might be too many bosses, which does happen when bringing companies together.
Those being laid off are being offered exit packages. This includes severance pay, extended healthcare, and services to help with the transition – although it will apparently differ based on country.
The email also notes that no current projects are being canceled because of this decision. Nor are any studios being closed. That’s better news than we’ve had from them before.
