MMOBOMB
Apr 01, 2024
Palia is in hot water right now, which is kind of ironic considering this MMO is all about coziness.
Developer Singularity 6 is currently dealing with a controversy over its handling of the beta phase for the game, which began last summer. That’s because Palia has been launched on various platforms without clear indication of its testing status. (It’s still in open beta.) This lack of transparency has confused players, who might reasonably assume the game is fully released based on its marketing and absence of beta labels (and cash shop prices).
To make matters worse, the developers’ response to the criticism has been seemingly dismissive, with Singularity 6 acknowledging the concerns without admitting fault or making label changes of any type.
In a recent developer update, the developers confirmed that Palia remains in open beta and has been since August 2023, yet emphasized its free-to-play nature. This clarification is not on the front page of the game’s website or displayed on platform pages though, it’s hidden away in blog posts, likely to only be viewed by already invested players.
Meanwhile, Palia sits at a “Mixed” rating on Steam with over 3,000 reviews.
We've had a few players reach out to us on the topic (thank you!) and last week we reached out to the Palia team to see if they'd be willing to answer some questions on the topic. We'll update this piece if we hear back.
