As expected, we’re never getting an actual PvE mode in Overwatch 2.
According to Bloomberg, that kind of content for the hero shooter has been officially canceled. Blizzard can’t figure out what the future of Overwatch looks like. PvE has only seen content in the form of three missions, which were released last year. The mode was monetized though, of course, and sales turned out to be poor. (Shocker!) On top of this, the team from this specific department at Blizzard has been affected by company-wide staff reductions.
It seems that poor reception may have had an impact on staff too. Reportedly, employees at Blizzard typically receive profit-sharing bonuses based on the company's overall performance, but recent changes tie these bonuses to the success of specific franchises. As a result, Overwatch 2 team members received no profit-sharing bonuses due to the game's underperformance — signaling a significant policy shift within Blizzard.
What changes going forward, as far as we know right now, is that Overwatch 2 will make all heroes accessible without the need for a paid battle pass come next season (Season 10) in mid-April. So basically, Overwatch 1. We’ve come full circle. And only because Blizzard ain’t doing so well financially.
