MMOBOMB
Oct 11, 2024
Yep, in my "not so hard a prediction to make" prediction, I got things right. Here I am, once again, writing up another New World: Aeternum piece as the clock ticks down to 7 days until the MMORPG's relaunch on PC and consoles. This time we're looking at the newly revealed Season of Opportunity battle pass and the rewards contained in it. I won't be listing EVERY reward here, but Amazon does exactly that for all 100 levels if you're super curious.
As expected, the battle pass contains the usual slew of mount cosmetics, armor cosmetics, transmog tokens, artifacts, and the pass comes in the usual "one free and one premium" track. If you want to pick up the premium pass, it'll cost you 20,000 Marks of Fortune. If you're curious, that's $20.00 USD. That means you'll either by the $5 bundle 4 times to get the exact amount, or purchase the $20 bundle of marks...and get the "bonus" 3K marks left over for your next purchase in typical F2P "top-off and make the next purchase easier to make" fashion.
Should you make it level 97 of the pass, you'll earn a total of 7K Marks of Fortune along the way for use on the next pass (or other show purchase.) 5K of that comes from the Premium track and 2K of that comes from the Free track.
No, the season pass isn't included in your purchase of the game, this will be an extra price. On the topic of "no" answers, no, you cannot make progress on this pass once this season closes. It'll be gone in favor of the new pass. You will eventually be able to gain the artifacts offered in future game activities, but you'll have to wait for those opportunities to arrive.
Finally, the pass is account and region specific, so don't change regions or you'll have to buy a new pass. Since it s account specific, this also means you're basically platform locked, too, since there's no cross progression in New World: Aeternum.
Sigh.
I'd really like to see New World: Aeternum evolve on this "tried and true" pass model. Pick up cues from other games that have allowed you to progress on your pass of choice at any time (ditching FOMO), make the pass available for cash purchase instead of forcing the currency purchase, and providing less than half of the cost of a pass as rewards in the pass seems like a shallow way of giving you just enough marks to make the purchase of the next pass "easier" but requiring a top off in typical "sunk cost fallacy" fashion. I'm sad to see this and hope it changes in the future.
