MMOBOMB
Mar 05, 2024
This is bittersweet.
Temtem has announced that it will cease the development of new content after its upcoming 1.7 update. This decision comes amidst debates over whether the game truly qualifies as an MMO, with some players feeling that the expectations set by its initial description as a "massively multiplayer" experience haven't been fully met.
The announcement of a new bullet hell action roguelike called Temtem: Swarm didn’t help, further fueling concerns among the community that the original Temtem was being abandoned.
Then, Crema — the developer behind the creature-collecting adventure game — clarified its stance, stating that the original game will continue to receive updates alongside the development of the new game. However, here we are today with this news that the upcoming 1.7 patch will mark the end of Temtem; it will stay online but effectively enter maintenance mode.
There is a bright side though. Although no new islands and Tems will be coming in the future, no new passes will enter either. In fact, all microtransactions will be completely removed. This decision to halt new content development stems from various factors, according to the developers, including technical challenges and the mismatch between development efforts and player engagement, with some players completing new content much faster than anticipated.
Unfortunately, we don’t get an offline mode. Still, there will be ongoing support through bug fixes, balance changes, and quality of life improvements. Crema also reassured players that it will ensure accessibility even if server availability becomes an issue in the future.
