Dauntless and Fae Farms are the two biggest projects over at Phoenix Labs and, but the looks of today's announcement, the company is pulling back on everything BUT those two projects. According to an announcement on LinkedIn, Phoenix Labs is "reorganizing" to "focus on our best-in-class live service titles, Dauntless and Fae Farm, and serving their communities."
This comes at the expense of every other project the company had in the works, including one that was potentially coming close to an official announcement. It also comes after layoffs at the company in December, a round of layoffs that was the second of 2023 after the company basically bought itself back.
While the official post doesn't specify how may employees were laid off, sources have told Polygon reporter Nicole Carpenter that the number of employees let go exceeds 100.
The announcement says that the company is "doing all they can" to assist those impacted during this period, but stops short of providing any details on potential job placement, severance, or other aid offered to the departing employees.
This was done to "ensure Phoenix Labs can survive"...a statement that doesn't speak all that glowingly of the company's potential future.
2024 continues to be a brutal year for anyone working in gaming, a field I am nervously watching my son try to obtain his college degree in, and we certainly hope these employees find new projects as fast as possible.
