Disney has seen pretty big success in its Fortnite crossovers, so much so that the media giant is now investing $1.5 billion with a "b" into Epic Games for an equity stake in the company. Not only will this mean more Disney content for Fortnite, but also new games and a Disney entertainment universe.
“Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe,” said Robert A. Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways.”
During an interview with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin, Iger said the investment was “probably our biggest foray into the game space ever.”
“Which I think is not only timely, but an important step when you look at the demographic trends and where Gen Alpha and Gen Z and even millennials are spending their time and media,” he said.
Chinese media giant Tencent also has about a 40% stake in Epic Games, and they got one heck of a deal in hindsight. Tencent only spent about $330 million for their portion of Epic back in the day.
