When Square Enix originally released Foamstars, the foam-shooting, Splatoon-like shooter was free for PS Plus subscribers to claim that month. Other than that, Foamstars has mysteriously held on to a $29.99 box fee. This was despite the game only being available on PlayStation 4 and 5 and a cash shop model that was literally designed in the same model as every other free-to-play game you've ever seen.
It was actually a mystery to us why they didn't launch as a F2P title from the start. With the limitations above, unless the game was absolutely stellar, it wouldn't catch on with a audience big enough to support the box fee.
Well, the predictable has happened.
On October 4th, Foamstars will not only covert to a F2P model entirely, but the previously required PS Plus subscription will also be removed, allowing any player to play online regardless of their subscription status.
If you bought (or claimed) the game previous to the change, you'll get a "Legacy Gift" containing the "Legacy" title, an exclusive Slide Board design, and 12 exclusive color-variant Bubble Beastie skins.
Now, about a release on other platforms including PC? While I don't think it would help the longevity of the game any at this point, it certainly couldn't hurt. There's no word on such a port yet, though.
