I'm not going to lie. When I first saw the announcement coming out of Team Matter and Gaijin Entertainment, makers of War Thunder, I kind of rolled my eyes. Initially, I saw the buzz words "tactical shooter" and "PvPvE", and just went, "Sure, why not, yet another one."
That said, "Active Matter" actually looks a bit interesting. Watching the trailer first, which I've placed below, you get kind of a spooky or otherworldly vibe. Physics seem to be broken with enemies upside-down on the celling and strange portals in certain places. The creepy music carries the vibe through the entire trailer. Even gravity seems to be just flat out broken.
While you'll be sporting authentic equipment in a first-person view, things going on around you aren't exactly "modern day." There's actually multiple timelines going on and you can bring items from one timeline to another, but it's random. You'll play as an operative trapped in a time loop, returning to the same point after each death.
Active Matter won't launch until next year, but when it does you'll see it on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. A closed beta fill fire later this year and you can sign up for that now. However, the beta will only be available on PC.
I have to admit, I'm kind of curious, even if I'm not generally a fan of PvPvE and PvP focused shooters. The official site breaks down some additional FAQs if you're curious, too.
