MMOBOMB
Jun 21, 2024
It’s okay everyone. Dune: Awakening is an MMO, and Funcom has 30 minutes of video to prove it. Yes, we jest. We knew it was an MMO. Although, it’s possible some folks might have disagreed. There might be some argument about it not being an MMORPG somewhere, but even if you didn’t think it has the role-playing elements, the game definitely has the massively, multiplayer, and online bits covered.
What is there to show then that makes Dune: Awakening an MMO? Well, the Dune: Awakening Direct video showcases the game’s “MMO-like server structure”, the narrative, character creation, and more. Dune: Awakening is interesting in that rather to trying to place characters into an existing IP as it’s known, Funcom has built an alternative universe.
This seems like an excellent move because one of the downfalls of MMORPGs is often that there are millions of “chosen ones” running around and we all just have to pretend that the people we’re playing with are not us. In Dune, this issue would be compounded by the existence of Paul Atreides.
But what happens if Paul was never born and the world is left with a big, empty Paul-shaped space? That’s where the players would come in, working to fill that space themselves. Sounds like a good place to start.
The Dune: Awakening Direct is available to watch below. The team also broke some of the segments out on their own. If you just want information on character creation, the narrative, or MMO features, each of those videos is available below too.
